Three men were wounded when Jordanian security forces raided a location in Karak governorate on Monday dawn. The Public Security Directorate confirmed the arrests in connection with a fatal attack on a Greek Orthodox church. No officers were injured during the operation.
The shooting occurred on Friday in the village of Hammoud, which lies south of the capital, Amman. The attack took place while a funeral service was being held at the church. Reports indicated that three individuals participated in the assault.
Interior Minister Mazen Al-Faraya stated by phone to the state broadcaster Al-Mamlaka that the three arrested men were responsible for the incident. He said the security services fulfilled their duties in capturing those who carried out the act. Al-Faraya noted that the suspects put up fierce resistance but were subdued after sustaining severe injuries.
The minister added that the trio had been identified early on. Security services used all available means to apprehend them. The Public Security Directorate said terrorism has no place among the people and that the men met their just fate.
No group has claimed responsibility for the Friday attack. Reuters noted that the directorate did not name the suspects or point to links with Islamist militant groups. King Abdullah II directed authorities to respond with an iron fist against those seeking to undermine national unity.
Karak is home to a minority Christian population. The three suspects were taken into custody on Monday. The security operation concluded with all three men in police control.
