Benhard Janse van Rensburg will miss England’s entire autumn international campaign after suffering two concussions within a three-month period. The 29-year-old centre has been stood down from all rugby duties indefinitely, a decision that removes him from the squad for the upcoming Nations Championship fixtures.

The most recent injury occurred on October 3 during Bristol Bears’ victory over Northampton Saints. Van Rensburg was knocked unconscious when England teammate Henry Pollock’s knee struck him while he attempted a tackle. Opposing players alerted the referee to stop play, allowing medical staff to treat the centre before he was stretchered from the field. He returned to the sidelines to celebrate the win with his teammates.

This is the second severe head injury Van Rensburg has sustained in a short span. His previous concussion happened during England’s second Test against Argentina, which cut his debut season short after he scored a try in his opening match against Fiji in July. To qualify for England, the RFU secured special permission from World Rugby, allowing the South African-born player to be eligible on residency grounds despite his prior U20 appearances for the Springboks.

England head coach Steve Borthwick confirmed the stand-down, stating that a specialist advised Van Rensburg to undertake weeks of non-contact work before reintroducing him to the game. "Benhard has seen a specialist and been advised to take a number of weeks of non-contact work before his reintroduction to rugby over the coming weeks," Borthwick said. This pause halts his immediate path to a third cap and delays his integration into the midfield ahead of the 2027 Rugby World Cup in Australia.

Van Rensburg will sit out matches against Australia, Japan, and New Zealand, as well as the finals weekend in London scheduled for late November. His next potential appearance for England could come during the Six Nations, contingent on his recovery progress. Bristol Bears director of rugby Pat Lam noted that an independent medical advisor determines the return timeline, a protocol he described as a safety priority outside the control of the club or player. The club hopes to have him back for the derby against Bath at the start of December.

The indefinite stand-down follows the signing of a new contract extension with the Bears. Van Rensburg is currently training but awaits the green light from the independent assessor. Lam emphasized that while the player feels frustration, the safety protocol ensures all players are protected before returning to contact play.
