The Milwaukee Brewers entered the World Series as a franchise without a championship banner, and they leave it with one after defeating the Tampa Bay Rays. For fans of the team, the celebration marks the end of a long drought. For the rest of Major League Baseball, the victory signals the start of a volatile offseason. The 2026-27 calendar is set, but a looming labor dispute threatens to freeze the market before it fully opens.

The current collective bargaining agreement expires on December 1. Owners are expected to impose a lockout if a new deal is not reached by that deadline. The duration of the stoppage is uncertain and could last days, weeks, or months. Such a pause might delay spring training or even disrupt the 2027 regular season unless the sides reach labor peace before camp begins.

The immediate schedule moves forward regardless of the labor talks. As of 9 a.m. ET on October 29, players with at least six years of service time became free agents. Trades involving 40-man roster players also resumed for the first time since the summer deadline. For the first five days, these free agents can only negotiate with their most recent club. Few players re-sign during this window, with Edwin Diaz's return to the Mets four years ago serving as a notable recent exception.

Key deadlines cluster around November 1 and 2. Gold Glove winners will be announced at 8:30 p.m. ET on November 1 during an ESPN broadcast. The Cubs and Blue Jays each have five finalists in that category. On November 2, most contract option decisions are due. This includes Michael King's opt-out with the Padres, Bo Bichette's opt-out with the Mets, and the Orioles' $20 million club option on Luis Robert Jr. The same day is the deadline to issue a qualifying offer, a one-year contract worth $23.15 million. Randy Arozarena is eligible to receive one from the Mariners, while Tarik Skubal is not because he was traded during the season. Free agency formally opens at 5 p.m. ET on that date.

Awards week runs from November 9 to 12 on MLB Network at 7 p.m. ET. The schedule covers Rookies of the Year, Managers of the Year, Cy Young Awards, and MVPs. The General Managers Meetings take place in Las Vegas from November 10 to 12, a venue where groundwork for later deals is often laid.

November 17 brings additional milestones. Silver Slugger winners will be announced, and free agents must accept or reject qualifying offers by 4 p.m. ET. Players who reject the offer carry draft pick compensation. Arozarena and Seiya Suzuki are expected to turn down the offer. Teams must also file reserve lists by 6 p.m. ET to protect minor leaguers from the Rule 5 Draft. Notable prospects on these lists include Dodgers right-hander Christian Zazueta and Nationals right-hander Travis Sykora. Owners will meet in New York from November 17 to 19, likely as a final strategy session before the CBA expires. The non-tender deadline follows on November 20.

If the CBA lapses at 11:59 p.m. ET on December 1, a lockout would freeze trades, signings, and negotiations involving 40-man roster players. The Hall of Fame's Classic Baseball Committee results, scheduled for December 6, remain unaffected. Other events are subject to change, including the Winter Meetings in San Diego from December 7 to 9, the December 8 draft lottery, and the December 9 Rule 5 Draft. The Winter Meetings and Rule 5 Draft were canceled during the last lockout, while the international signing period, set to open January 15, proceeded as scheduled. The 2027 Hall of Fame class is set to be announced on January 19.
