Tripp Bryant converted four field goals and Taeo Todd scored a rushing touchdown as Georgia Southern defeated Appalachian State 19-3 on Saturday night in Statesboro, Ga.
The Eagles (4-4, 3-1) moved to the top of the Sun Belt Conference East Division standings with the victory. They improved their record to 5-0 in games played on Halloween.
Bryant opened the scoring with a 25-yard kick almost a minute into the second quarter. Todd then capped a 12-play, 81-yard drive with a five-yard rush to extend the lead to 10-3 with 7:04 remaining in the first half.
App State’s James London missed a 35-yard attempt with about five minutes left in the second quarter. He later made a 33-yard kick as time expired to put the Mountaineers on the board at 10-3 for halftime.
Appalachian State (5-3, 2-2) struggled offensively, managing only 222 total yards. The team gained just six yards on the ground and converted on only two of nine third-down attempts.
Georgia Southern quarterback Max Johnson passed for 318 yards on 36 of 47 attempts. Wide receiver Alex Taylor hauled in 10 passes for 93 yards. Bryant added three more kicks in the second half from distances of 35, 34, and 48 yards.
Defensive back Chance Gamble intercepted a pass in the end zone with 3:02 remaining to seal the result. The Eagles have won four consecutive meetings against App State, though the Mountaineers lead the all-time series 21-20-1.
Center Jayden Thomas did not return after taking a hard hit to the head from defensive lineman Eli Anders just before halftime. He was carted off the field after lying motionless for several minutes. App State also played without left tackle Devon Manuel, who suffered a season-ending injury in a 34-31 overtime win over James Madison on Oct. 22.
Both teams host opponents next Saturday. Georgia Southern faces Marshall, while Appalachian State hosts Georgia State.
