Elias Lindholm scored the winning goal in overtime to lead the Boston Bruins past the Chicago Blackhawks 5-4 on Saturday. The victory extends Boston's home winning streak to five games. The Bruins trailed by two goals late in the third period before mounting a late surge.
Mason Lohrei pulled Boston within one goal during the third period. Morgan Geekie added his second goal of the season with 12 seconds remaining in regulation to force extra time. The Blackhawks had taken a 4-2 lead earlier in the third period on goals from Ryan Greene and Connor Bedard. Anton Frondell also scored for Chicago, recording his second career two-goal game.
Chicago started the game with the league's worst power play unit, converting on only four of their previous 40 opportunities. Frondell capitalized on the first chance, scoring 11 seconds into the first power play to give the Blackhawks the lead. That goal came after Will Borgen drew a delay-of-game penalty.
Goaltender Michael DiPietro kept the game close despite Boston being outshot 28-13 in the first two periods. He made key saves, including stopping a shot from Connor Bedard with two minutes and nine seconds left in the first period. Geekie, who had not scored in his previous nine games, also hit the post late in that period.
David Pastrnak scored on a breakaway in the first period to reach 428 career goals. This milestone moved him into sole possession of third place on the Bruins' career goal-scoring list, passing Patrice Bergeron. Casey Mittelstadt and Mason Lohrei also scored for Boston in the first period.
The Blackhawks came into the game with the worst power play in the NHL. They were 0 for 11 on the power play on the road entering Saturday's matchup. Frondell's early goal was the first time Chicago scored on the power play in this season's road games.
The game was part of a busy NHL slate on Saturday. Other results included the Edmonton Oilers defeating the New York Islanders 4-0, the Nashville Predators beating the Tampa Bay Lightning 5-4 in a shootout, and the St. Louis Blues overcoming the Detroit Red Wings 5-4.
The Bruins remain at home for their next scheduled game. The Blackhawks will continue their road trip. Pastrnak's 428th goal stands as the latest addition to the team's historical records.
