Connecticut Sen. Chris Murphy is 53 years old and currently hospitalized for a stroke. His chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, said the incident began on Saturday when the senator felt numbness in his arm while watching his son play hockey. He was transported to a local facility where medical staff identified the stroke. Murphy has since been moved to Johns Hopkins for continued monitoring.

Herwitt stated in a statement that doctors are encouraged by his progress. She reported that Murphy is awake and alert. The office expressed optimism regarding a full recovery. Murphy is not facing voters in the upcoming Tuesday election. He has served in the House since 2006 and the Senate since 2012.

In the upper chamber, Murphy sits on the Appropriations Committee. He is a prominent figure on immigration and gun policy. Party colleagues view him as a potential candidate for senior leadership roles. He is also considered a possible contender for the 2028 presidential nomination.

Several other Senate Democrats have experienced strokes in recent years. New Mexico Sen. Ben Ray Lujan and Maryland Sen. Chris Van Hollen both suffered strokes in 2022. Both have recovered. Pennsylvania Sen. John Fetterman had a stroke while campaigning in 2022. He now uses adaptive technology in the Senate. This includes live captioning on devices to help him process conversations.

Fetterman posted on social media on Sunday. He said his family is rooting for Murphy and his family for a full and speedy recovery. Several Republican senators also offered prayers. This group includes Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley and Nebraska Sen. Pete Ricketts. President Donald Trump said he was really surprised to learn of the stroke. He added that nobody wants to have that condition.

Murphy has been traveling the country to support Democratic candidates for House and Senate seats. His party is racing for majority control. On Friday, he posted that he was campaigning in Connecticut for Gov. Ned Lamont. Last week, he campaigned in Minnesota with Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan. Flanagan is the Democratic nominee for Senate. This trip capped a whirlwind schedule. It followed his October meetings with Middle East leaders, including Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman. In early September, he completed his annual walk across Connecticut. That trek covered about 70 miles over four days.

Connecticut Sen. Richard Blumenthal wrote a statement on Sunday. He called Murphy a great friend and colleague. Blumenthal said he knows how fiercely Murphy fights. He expressed certainty that he will be welcoming Murphy back to the Senate soon.
