For Gotham Football Club supporters, the 2026 regular season concluded with a historic milestone. The Bats secured the league's first regular season title on Sunday night, a distinction the franchise had not achieved in its previous history. The victory over the Utah Royals at S.I. Stadium marked the end of a tight race for the Shield.
Gotham's defense remained the strongest in the National Women's Soccer League throughout the year. The team conceded only 23 goals in 30 regular season matches. They also recorded 14 clean sheets during that span, in addition to another in the NWSL Challenge Cup final. This defensive stability contrasted sharply with their recent form, as the squad had allowed goals in each of its final eight matches before the season finale.
The title race was decided by a narrow margin. San Diego Wave FC finished three points behind Gotham, while the Washington Spirit placed third, three points behind San Diego. Gotham needed only a draw to claim the Shield after San Diego dropped points in their previous match. The 2-0 win provided momentum heading into the postseason.
Guro Reiten scored the opening goal from a tight angle within the first 10 minutes. In the 80th minute, Midge Purce assisted Jaedyn Shaw for the second goal. Shaw returned to the field for that match following an injury. Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger made two saves to secure her 11th clean sheet of the season.
The playoff bracket now features the top three teams: Gotham, San Diego, and Washington. The two teams with the highest offensive output, Kansas City and Angel City, both scored 54 goals and finished fourth and fifth. This aligns them for a first round matchup. Washington will face the sixth seeded Portland Thorns, while Utah dropped to the seventh seed following their loss.
Utah and Seattle both finished with 47 points. Utah held a +5 goal differential compared to Seattle's +4, which allowed the Royals to host their playoff opener in San Diego. Seattle will travel to the Northeast for their first round game against Gotham. That match is scheduled for 12:30pm on Sunday, November 8.
Gotham has already won two trophies this season. The team plays its home games at S.I. Stadium before moving to Etihad Park in Queens in 2028.
