Anthropic's anticipated public listing, scheduled for later this year at a valuation of as much as $2 trillion, stands to create substantial wealth for its diverse roster of backers. The potential for financial gain extends from the earliest investors who committed capital when the company was a nascent startup to more recent participants in much larger funding rounds.

Even prior to any public offering, the value of existing stakes in the artificial intelligence firm is already considerable, based on its most recent private market valuation of $965 billion. This figure alone has elevated the holdings of numerous venture capital firms and individual investors into the multi-billion dollar range, according to data from Bloomberg. The financial trajectory of these investments illustrates the company's rapid growth from a relatively small valuation to its current position as a leading AI lab.

Among the individuals who stand to benefit is Eric Schmidt, the former Google chief executive. Mr. Schmidt participated in Anthropic's Series A funding round in 2021, a period when the company's total valuation was $461 million, according to PitchBook data. He presently holds approximately 1% of the company, a stake that, at the current private valuation, is valued at nearly $10 billion.

Investment outfit Iconiq made a significant late-stage contribution of $6 billion last year, when the company was already valued at $183 billion. That single transaction has grown to a current worth of $17 billion, with the potential to double upon a public offering. Similarly, Menlo Ventures, a venture capital firm that led Anthropic's Series D and has invested more than $1 billion in total, now holds a position valued at $14 billion.

More recent entrants to the company's cap table have also seen their investments appreciate substantially. Sequoia, a prominent venture capital firm, made its initial investment in Anthropic earlier this year, contributing $3 billion at a company valuation of $380 billion. This transaction resulted in a stake of approximately 1%, which has already more than doubled in value.

Other significant positions are held by Sound Ventures, an entity established by Guy Oseary and actor Ashton Kutcher. The firm initially invested $35 million during Anthropic's 2023 Series C round and has since contributed an additional $400 million. It is worth noting that Mr. Kutcher departed from Sound Ventures this year to establish a new venture capital firm.

Spark Capital, identified as the only venture capital firm known to hold a board seat at Anthropic, invested $75 million in the same 2023 Series C round, when the company's valuation was $5 billion. That initial investment has since grown to a value of $7 billion, representing a more than ninetyfold increase. The valuation of these stakes is contingent on the company's final public offering price, which has yet to be determined.
