At least six people died and dozens were injured in a series of shootings that hit entertainment districts and retail spaces across the United States this weekend. The violence occurred between Friday and the early hours of Sunday, with the heaviest toll in Texas and Alabama.
In Dallas, four people were killed and 15 others wounded in the Deep Ellum district. Police Chief Daniel Comeaux said three separate shootings took place over a period of about 1 hour and 15 minutes on Saturday night. He described the scene as extensive and dispersed. Authorities have detained some suspects but are still investigating whether the three incidents are connected. Officers had increased their presence in the area before the attacks, and no police were hurt.
In Birmingham, Alabama, one person died and eight were injured near Legion Field. The shooting happened after the Magic City Classic football game, which drew approximately 70,000 spectators. Police Chief Michael Pickett noted that most fans had left the stadium when the gunfire started in a vendor zone nearby. Spokesman De’Rell Freeman said one person was detained for questioning and several weapons were found. The cause of the attack remains under investigation.
Shooting also occurred near the University of Delaware campus in Newark. Lieutenant Greg D’Elia reported that six people were shot on Saturday night. Victims were taken to hospitals, but police had not provided an update on their condition as of Sunday evening. Social media videos showed people running from the area, and a section of the main street remained closed for hours while officers investigated.
In Bloomington, Illinois, a shooting near the campus of Illinois Wesleyan University left a 19-year-old woman dead and another person in critical condition early Sunday. Six others sustained minor injuries, though authorities did not specify if all were caused by gunfire. The location is about 217 kilometers southwest of Chicago.
Arkansas saw two incidents early Sunday. In Fayetteville, six people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds near commercial businesses. Police said there were no arrests and that a preliminary investigation pointed to a prior argument as a possible trigger. In a separate incident southwest of Little Rock, a man died and several people were injured near a shopping center. Officials did not state how many people were hurt.
The weekend began with two deadly shootings at Spirit Halloween stores. In Fairfield, California, a 31-year-old woman died and six others were hurt inside a store in a covered mall. Police said the attack was premeditated, and family members told authorities the victim was pregnant. In Madison Heights, Michigan, a 21-year-old man died after being shot at another Spirit Halloween location. A second man was hospitalized after being assaulted by passersby while officers were detaining him; his injuries were not life-threatening.
