Maryland State Senator Antonio Hayes has been named chair of the Senate Finance Committee. The role places him in charge of some of the state's most influential legislative decisions.
Hayes is the third African American to lead this committee in Maryland history. He is also the first lawmaker from Baltimore City to hold the post since 2002.
The committee controls legislation related to health care, insurance, and workers' rights. It also handles bills on economic development and consumer protection. Hayes said he will focus on making health care more affordable and improving access to prescription medications.
He also plans to prioritize workforce development and stronger protections for workers. Hayes noted that the committee's decisions affect nearly every part of a Marylander's life. He cited the ability of families to afford prescriptions as a key example.
Hayes was raised by his grandmother in West Baltimore. He became her caregiver after she developed Alzheimer's disease. That experience shaped his view on the financial and emotional costs of health care for families.
The appointment comes as the Trump administration pushes for changes to federal health programs. The One Big Beautiful Bill Act includes cuts to Medicaid. Hayes said Maryland must be ready to protect residents from rising costs and coverage threats. He has served in the Maryland Senate since 2019.
His prior experience includes four years on the House Health and Government Operations Committee. That background will inform his approach to health care policy. Hayes represents the 40th Legislative District in Baltimore City.
