Lamar Jackson has missed three games since aggravating an ankle injury on Oct. 7, and his availability for the Ravens' matchup in Buffalo on Sunday remains unsettled. Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter told reporters on Wednesday that he could not yet determine Jackson's status for the week. "Creo que cuanto más puedas hacer, responder y sentir, sin duda aumentará tu optimismo", Minter said, adding that the situation would be evaluated as the week progresses.
Baltimore's handling of Jackson's injuries has followed a pattern. After he hurt his ankle earlier this month, Minter said on Oct. 7 that a decision would come later in the week. That language left open the possibility of a quick return, but Jackson has not played since. The Ravens declined to disclose details of the injury, consistent with how the organization has treated such information in the past. When Jackson hurt his knee against Denver in 2022, coach John Harbaugh said at the time it was not a season-ending injury. Jackson did not return that year.
Jackson spoke with reporters last week and said he had been diagnosed with a severe ankle sprain. "Solo intento moverme a mi manera", he said. "Si no puedo hacerlo, no puedo ayudar a mi equipo".
The Ravens' silence on injury details has created a cycle in which fans anticipate a return each week and then learn Jackson will not play. Jackson has sometimes addressed his condition himself. More than a month after the 2022 knee injury, with a playoff game approaching, he wrote on social media that he had a grade 2 posterior cruciate ligament sprain and that his knee remained unstable.
Jackson's record on availability differs from other quarterbacks of his caliber. Since becoming a full-time starter in 2019, he ranks seventh in starts among NFL quarterbacks. Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes have started more often, while Joe Burrow and Brock Purdy have dealt with injuries of their own. Cornerback Marlon Humphrey addressed the question of whether Jackson would take the field when healthy. "No sé si es por falta de representante o qué, que nadie puede defenderlo", Humphrey said. "Lo que sí sé es esto: si Lamar Jackson puede jugar, si está lo suficientemente sano para jugar, jugará, y eso es todo lo que puedo decir al respecto".
Jackson suffered a hamstring injury in Week 4 of the 2025 season. The Ravens lost their next two games without him and finished that stretch 1-5. He missed one more game after the bye before returning. Jackson later said he played while not fully recovered. "Creo que fue un poco tonto", he said last week. "Todavía estoy lesionado y estoy tratando de ayudar a mi equipo a ganar, pero no estoy al 100%, ni siquiera cerca de estarlo".
Jackson was named MVP in 2023 and made the All-Pro team in 2024. He was playing at that level early this season before the ankle injury. He turns 30 in January. According to overthecap.com, his contract carries a cap figure of roughly $84 million in 2027, the final year of the deal.
